Event Description

Join Celebration of Our Mountains trip leaders for an exciting field trip to Kilbourne Hole, a fascinating volcanic maar and the youngest volcano in the El Paso/Juรกrez region. This site is not only a geological wonder but also served as a training ground for Apollo astronauts!

๐ŸŒ‹ What Youโ€™ll Discover:

  • Stunning geological formations from ancient volcanic activity

  • Peridot (Augustโ€™s birthstone), which erupted in massive quantities and can be found around the area

  • Insights into the regionโ€™s volcanic history and its role in space exploration

What to Bring:

โœ” Plenty of water & snacks
โœ” Sturdy hiking shoes & comfortable clothing
โœ” Hat & sunscreen
โœ” High-clearance vehicle (required for rough terrain โ€“ Pickups, Jeeps, and SUVs recommended)

Vehicle & Carpool Info:

  • High-clearance vehicles required. If you donโ€™t have one, carpooling is highly encouraged.

  • Plan ahead to arrange a ride if needed.

๐Ÿ•‘ 2:00 PM โ€“ Arrive back in El Paso

โš  Difficulty: Beginner โ€“ Off-trail walking required, but minimal hiking
